Let’s Get Started
First, we need to collect supplies but there is really only two items to buy.
I ended up with quite a few sponges, chalk it up to multiple shopping trips where I couldn’t remember how many I had so I would grab a few more packages. Although I am glad I grabbed as many as I did.
Making the Water Balloons
I opened up and dumped out all the sponges. This way I could cut them all and try to mix up the colors a little. When you buy the sponges, make sure they are not the ones with a scratchy side, or they may hurt to be hit with. They kids were so excited they took on the task of laying them all out.
First Step is to cut the sponges up into strips. I started cutting them into thirds, but they seemed awfully big. I cut those in half again and they were much better. It is really your preference though on the size you want to use. I think the best size was cutting the sponges into 5 or 6 pieces.
Also, I know I had kid scissors in the picture, and I started out with those, but I HIGHLY recommend you use adult scissors, or your hands are going to HURT by then end. Trust me. I switched shortly after I started. Even better if you have alder kids, have them help.
Once you have all of the sponges cut up, I tried to mix up the colors a little to make them more colorful. Then grab 8 strips and bundle them together.
I used medium sized rubber bands to hold them together, I have also seen people use string, but I thought the rubber bands would be easier. Put them around the middle a couple times until they are tight and there you go! You may need fluff them up a bit the first time. I made somewhere between 25-30 of them. The kids kept stealing them so I lost count.
Now it’s time to throw them a bucket and head outside. The best part of these is that you can keep using them over and over so you never “run out” of water balloons!
When you are done lay them out to dry and then store them until you are ready to use them again and again.
