I love a good bowl of ice cream drizzled in chocolate sauce. There is just something about ice cream on a hot summer day.

Don’t fret if you don’t have any in the freezer. I have fun recipe for you to make your own with your kids.

Plus the process helps cool you off from all that ice!

Let’s Make Some Ice Cream

First off, collect all your supplies because kids are impatient, and you don’t want a half full bag. It is just bound to tip over and spill. So, make sure you have everything ready before you start. Also, I would highly suggest double bagging everything. Best safe than sorry in these types of situations. You don’t want salty ice cream and you really don’t want a mess to clean up.

Supplies

  • Quart Ziplock bags
  • Gallon Ziplock bags
  • Whole Milk
  • Half and Half
  • Sugar
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Ice
  • Ice Cream Salt

Mixing It Up

Start with your quart sized bags, Add 1 cup of milk and 1 cup of half and half. Next, add 3 tablespoons of sugar and last add 1 teaspoon of vanilla. If you want your ice cream less sweet you can always use less sugar. Try to remove as much as possible and seal those bags up tight! As I mentioned I would highly suggest double bagging this as well.

This is for one bag. You can make as many bags as your heart desires. I would suggest only making what you are going to eat right away though. It tends to freeze pretty solid if you try to freeze the leftovers and it is a pain to eat later.

Freezing Your Ice Cream

Now you will take your gallon bags and fill them about halfway with ice. Then add about 1 cup of salt over the ice in your bag. Next, place your bag of ice cream in. This is why you want all the air out of your bags so you can fit it all in. Last, I would suggest you double bag this as well.

Now comes the shaking part. You can wrap it in a towel and pass it around to different kids but keep shaking the bag, so it gets nice and cold. This may take some time. Depending on your ice/salt ration or your shaking abilities it can take anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes to get the ice cream to your desired consistency.

I made two bags of ice cream so we could trade back and forth and have plenty of ice cream for us all.

Time to Eat

Once your ice cream gets to the right consistency it’s time to open up those bags. If you are worried about it getting salty you can rinse off the inside bag before opening.

Divide your ice cream up into bowls, add your toppings, and ENJOY!
