Some of my favorite things about the snow finally melting is getting to see the flowers start to bloom. The best way to do that is to plant some flowers.
I want my kids to be able to enjoy those little things in life, like picking out the prettiest flower in our local greenhouse and bringing them home to plant.

There is so many opportunities to learn through this whole projects!
- Picking and naming colors
- Talking through the different vegetable plants and how they make our food
- Petting the animals (this only applies in your truly local greenhouses)
- Practice large motor skills to fit all the flowers in a box, and not drop said box
- Large motor skills to dig up and water flowers
- Responsibility to continue to water the flowers and watch them grow
Pick Your Flowers
I absolutely love going to a greenhouse and seeing the endless possibilities of blooming flowers. The kids also through this was great because they got to pick out the flowers that they wanted. Granted, I may have steered them towards the ones I wanted and let them pick those colors. Hey, a mom has to do what a mom has to do.
We also always buy flowers for my husband’s grandfather so the kids were thrilled to pick out flowers for Great Papa as well.
They also may have gotten sidetracked by a cat…
Plant The Flowers
Once we got home it was all hands-on deck. Everyone has a shovel and set to getting their flowers in the planters. It was a little tricky at first so they didn’t get too rough with the flowers but they were soo proud when it was done.
Just make sure you have enough shovels so they aren’t fighting over them. Don’t worry you can find some at the dollar store, they don’t have to be perfect. Just functional for the kids. I kept the nicer one for myself.
When we started I placed all the flowers in the planter where I wanted them to help the kids with placement as well. Otherwise I turn away to help one and the others have all the plants in one small circle and the rest of the planter is empty.. Always plan one step ahead.
Water The Flowers
Once all the dirty work is complete its time to water!
We have a watering can that the kids can carry, they each set out to water their flowers.
Now the main work is done and we can enjoy the pop of color in our front yard.
We also have the kids help water the flowers throughout the summer, this helps give them a little more responsibility but also what kid doesn’t want to play in the water??
Thank you for being part of our fun! Good luck with your own adventures and remember it doesn’t have to be perfect. The imperfect memories are the best ones!
