Painting birdhouses can be messy but so much fun!
Just be prepared for the mess…and I wouldn’t suggest turning your back at ANY TIME.

No matter how “pretty” the houses might be, the memories that are created are worth far more than the mess and chaos. The best way to make it go smoothly is to plan ahead and soak up the laughs and smiles.
My kids had so much fun with this project, and I hope that you also find enjoyment from it.
Supplies
- Birdhouses
- Paint
- Brushes and Spillproof containers
- Towels
- Kids Paint Smock
- Tablecloth
- Sealant (to prevent rain from washing off the paint)
Preparation
Have your supplies set up and ready! There is nothing more frustrating than trying to get things set up while all three kids are screaming because they all want different things.
I have learned the best way to keep the peace and not get frustrated is to have a game plan, get supplies ready, and then go with the flow.
I cannot say enough about cheap throw away table clothes!!! They make clean up a breeze and so much less stressful. I also am in love with spillproof paint containers and smocks. The number of times those get tipped over or fall on the floor is crazy, but these keep it all clean.
I also highly suggest washable paint. We wanted to hang the birdhouses outside, so I used washable paint with the kids. Then used sealant for when they were dry. This prevents the rain doesn’t wash away the paint.
Painting Birdhouses
Now we get to the fun part, painting birdhouses! I set up each kid with their own birdhouse and all the supplies they needed. I also had a birdhouse for myself, but my son claimed that one too. Oh well, the things we do for the people we love.
Sealing/Weatherproofing
Once the birdhouses were painted, we set them aside to dry. Depending on the amount of paint that they used this may take some time. I let ours dry for a few days to ensure they were 100% dry. Next, I used the sealant to give them a nice shine and ensure they would be weatherproof.
Hanging Your Birdhouses
Last, find your perfect spot to hang up your amazing birdhouses. I suggest putting them in a place that you can see out a window so the kids can watch. Then if you get a new resident in your birdhouse the kids can see all their hard work put to use!
